  • well said charlie. i reblogged this on tumblr.
  • Once in a while, I write ok stuff. The rest of the time, it's kayaking
    and lolcats.
  • Why haven't those two things been macro'd yet?
  • It's shameful yes, but I no longer spend hours reading the New York Times or Wall Street Journal most days. I too read blogs of friends or collegues to find out what IS important to my life, my circle of loved ones. With all of the different ways in which we can get our information now, it only makes sense that we would begin to filter it as close to "home" as possible.
  • Plus, it's not like your friends don't reblog important stuff
either.... so you do get NYT and WSJ... just screened.
  • human filters are the best kind.

if I may add about twitter, having a lot of my nola friends on twitter while we were all evacuated (some stayed, too) was really, really great. great way to stay sane.
  • You bring up so many great points in this post.

but the one part I'm still mulling over is the notion that you don't get anything out of it if you don't comment.

so few people actually comment so what does that mean in the end?

e.g. I get a lot out of seth godin's blog but he doesn't have comments turned on?
but in the end for me, I love comments. giving & getting.

jamie from phonetag said it best to me yesterday in a comment :)

he said every time he gets an email from Disqus it makes him smile.

  • I don't get much out of Seth talking at me w/o giving anyone a chance to
respond... I don't subscribe to his blog anymore. I'd rather read the
book. At least I know it's not supposed to be interactive.
  • nice writing. btw this reasoning to me is what makes twitter so special as a social place
  • Yes, especially when you don't do something silly like subscribe to 6000
    people.
  • "relevance, and a sense of authentic community" - that about sums it up. Great piece.
  • Twitter headline was a great elevator pitch: "I eat friends" -- ended up here before my Google Reader break.

I'd say I'm about 50/50 with subscriptions to friends vs people I don't know, but I find myself reading more from people I know and less from others lately. Just gotta get more friends writing...
  • We'll tackle that Monday!
  • very true.

in the same sense that there are many, many, more LJers or Tumblrs than Scobles out there, I think that by and large most web services have missed the mark entirely by not harnessing that sense of small but meaningful community built around real connections. it may sound reductive but, by and large, most people only want to hear from the people who matter to them, and only want to share as far as a meaningful context will carry.

someone will get this right soon, and you probably won't hear about it on Twitter...
  • Or... I will... but just from a couple of people who really care about
    me. :)
  • I like lurking on blogs. To me they are like "Author Previews" I rarely comment but I browse many different blogs regularly and when I find someone whoes writing I appreciate, I become a regular reader.

I'm a fan of design blogs in particular, (Design Sponge) and really I enjoy browsing the beautiful pictures.
